Congenital Eye Conditions in Children
Some children are born with eye conditions that affect their vision from birth—these are known as congenital eye conditions. Early detection and treatment are essential to ensure your child has the best chance of developing healthy vision and avoiding long-term complications.
At Sydney Eye Care – Burwood, we specialise in the early diagnosis, monitoring, and management of congenital eye problems in babies and young children. Dr Loren Rose combines medical expertise with a warm, family-friendly approach to help your child see the world clearly and confidently.
What Are Congenital Eye Conditions?
Congenital eye conditions are present at birth and may involve the structures of the eye, the muscles that control eye movement, or the pathways to the brain. These conditions can range from mild to serious and may or may not be visible to parents at first.
Some of the most common congenital eye conditions include: • Congenital cataract – clouding of the eye’s lens that can affect vision from birth • Congenital glaucoma – increased eye pressure that can damage the optic nerve • Ptosis – drooping of the upper eyelid that may obstruct vision • Congenital blocked tear duct – causes constant watering or discharge • Strabismus – misaligned eyes that can lead to amblyopia (lazy eye) • Optic nerve or retinal abnormalities – such as optic nerve hypoplasia, retinitis pigmentosa.
Signs to Look Out For
While some congenital conditions are picked up at birth or during newborn screening, others may become noticeable in the first few months of life. Parents should look for: • Cloudiness or whiteness in the pupil • Frequent eye watering or discharge • Eyes that don’t follow objects or make eye contact • Eye fluttering, unusual movements, or poor focus • One eye that turns in, out, up, or down • Droopy eyelids or eyelid asymmetry • Sensitivity to light or persistent squinting
