Comprehensive Eye Exams

At Sydney Eyecare Burwood, we offer comprehensive eye examinations to help you maintain your vision and eye health at any age.

These examinations will include tests for vision, eye pressure, and eye muscle function and the back of the eyes.

Clinic treatment of Medical Retina

We can diagnose and treat medical retina conditions such as AMD and diabetic retinopathy in our clinic.

These conditions can be progressive and lead to irreversible vision loss. Prompt treatment can stabilise and even improve vision, but the best results are achieved when treatment is started early.

The Doctors

Dr Allan Bank

MBBS (Syd) FRANZCO FRACS

Dr Allan Bank graduated from Sydney University Medical School and completed residency training at Royal North Shore Hospital. This was followed by a year of basic research in the Save Sight Institute labs and specialist training at Sydney Eye Hospital.

An advanced fellowship in glaucoma at the prestigious UT Southwestern, Dallas, Texas, under Professor Rand Allingham and Professor Karanjit Kooner followed. An offer to join the faculty at UT Southwestern was declined due to a desire to raise his family in Australia watching cricket rather than remaining in the United States and following baseball!

He was offered positions at Bankstown and Prince of Wales public hospitals on return to Australia. He runs the Glaucoma Unit at the Prince of Wales Hospital and supervises registrar training in cataract and glaucoma surgery. Dr Bank was also instrumental in establishing the new Chatswood Private Hospital, a world-class eye and ENT surgery facility.

He is a Peer reviewer for the American Journal of Ophthalmology and has published extensively in numerous journals. Current research relates to glaucoma imaging in glaucoma diagnosis.

Perhaps his proudest achievement would be coaching club-level cricket for many years, not to mention his keen interest in playing soccer and cycling.

Dr Loren Rose

BSc (Hons) MBBS (Hons) FRANZCO PhD (MU)

Dr Loren Rose completed her medical degree from the University of Sydney, graduating with MBBS (Honours). Prior to that, she completed a Bachelor of Science from the University of Sydney, graduating with Honours (Class I) in Visual Neuroscience.

Dr Rose completed her ophthalmic training at Victoria's Royal Eye and Ear Hospital. Following this, she underwent a fellowship in paediatric ophthalmology at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne. She is a Clinical Senior Lecturer at Macquarie University and completed her PhD at Macquarie University titled Myopia progression in Children.

With a long history of university teaching, including basic sciences at Sydney University to medical and science students, Dr Rose is involved in ophthalmic registrar training both in her public VMO position at Bankstown Hospital and Westmead Children's Hospital and in private rooms.

She has multiple research projects and collaborations at the University of Canberra and Macquarie University. She is also currently an adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Canberra. Her other passion is helping educate all eye care professionals on myopia management in children.

Dr Gaurav Bhardwaj

MBBS BMed FRANZCO PhD (UNSW)

Dr Gaurav Bhardwaj is a vitreoretinal surgeon and medical retina specialist. He is an experienced ophthalmic surgeon with particular expertise in vitreoretinal surgery, cataract surgery and medical management of retinal diseases. He is one of the few retinal surgeons in Australia skilled in both adult and paediatric surgery. In 2019, he was a co-surgeon involved in performing Australia’s first ocular gene therapy on a child with retinitis pigmentosa associated with RPE65 retinal dystrophy at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

He has a strong interest in research, having completed a Ph.D. on retinal haemorrhages in children. He was awarded a research grant from the Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation. Dr Bhardwaj undertook specialist training in Ophthalmology in the Sydney Eye Hospital network for four years.

He completed a further 2 years of fellowship training in Medical Retina, Uveitis, and Vitreoretinal Surgery, then completed at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital (RVEEH) in Melbourne, Australia's largest Retinal Unit. In 2018, he was a senior Vitreoretinal Fellow at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, UK, the largest eye hospital in Europe.

At Moorfields, Dr Bhardwaj worked with world-renowned experts and managed adult and paediatric patients from all over Europe with complex vitreoretinal disorders. He was also exposed to the latest research in the areas of retinal gene therapy, stem cell treatment and bionic eyes.

Dr Bhardwaj has continued his research interest with ongoing publications in major scientific journals. He also maintains his knowledge of the latest research in his field by being a reviewer for major scientific journals. He is involved in supervising junior eye surgeons and retinal fellows from Australia and abroad in surgical training.

Dr Bhardwaj prides himself on providing the best possible care for his patients. His professionalism is reflected by the numerous written compliments he has received from extremely grateful patients he has helped along the way.

Dr Rohan Gupta

MBBS (Hons) MMed (Oph Sci) FRANZCO

Dr Gupta is an Australian-trained Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists. He is dual fellowship trained, with advanced specialisations in Glaucoma and Complex Cataract & Anterior Segment surgery. He aims to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care and prides himself on understanding his patients’ individual needs and concerns in order to ensure the best visual outcomes.

Dr Gupta attained his Bachelor's Degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of New South Wales, followed by a Master's in Medicine (Ophthalmic Sciences) from the University of Sydney and a Graduate Diploma in Cataract and Refractive Surgery from the University of Sydney.

Dr Gupta completed his specialist Ophthalmology training at Sydney Eye Hospital. He undertook his first Fellowship in Glaucoma at Westmead Hospital, focusing on Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery. This was followed by a second Fellowship in Complex Cataract and Anterior Segment surgery, focusing on managing complex surgical cases with individualised, safe, and effective surgical strategies.

Dr Gupta is a Clinical Lecturer at the University of New South Wales and has been published in peer-reviewed international medical journals. He keeps up to date with the most recent developments in Ophthalmology to provide his patients with the best care.

Dr Sarya Saks

FRCOphth FRANZCO

Dr Saks is a comprehensive ophthalmologist practising general ophthalmology, including cataract, glaucoma and medical retina. He completed his medical degree at the University of Pretoria and then obtained fellowships in ophthalmology from Colleges in South Africa and the United Kingdom.

He obtained his Fellowship from the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists after completing his registrar time at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney.

Dr Saks has undertaken numerous volunteer “Sight Saver Tours” to assist in supplying eye care and ocular surgery to the underprivileged in Africa. He has gained experience working in ophthalmology at the Cambridge University Hospital, Addenbrookes, in the United Kingdom and completed a Aviation Medicine course.
